Upcoming 4-H Deadlines and Events

On January 7, 2012 from 8 a.m. - 11 a.m. is the Wise County Youth Fair tag-in for sheep, goats, hogs, non-registered heifers and dairy sale heifers.  If you miss this tag in date you will not be eligible to show in the WCYF. Just because you tag your animal, does not mean you are entered in the WCYF. Entries open on January 9^th and will close on February 11^th. For more information go to http://www.wcyouthfair.org.

Livestock Judging practices will be at 5pm on January 11^th, 18^th, and 25^th at the Extension office. Livestock Judging teaches youth about market animal characteristics and selection and helps with public speaking skills. All 4-H members are welcome to attend and please bring a pencil and paper to take notes.

Consumer Decision Making practices will be at 5pm on January 12^th and 26^th at the Extension office. Consumer decision making is a project based on teaching youth about selecting products at the store based on economics and product information. All 4-H members are welcome to attend and please bring a pencil and paper to take notes.

            There will be an ‘Upcycle’ Tote Bag Sewing Workshop on January 19^th from 4:30-6p at the Extension Office. The only supplies you will need to bring are an old t-shirt (preferably an adult medium or larger) and matching thread. Please call the Extension office at 627-3341 by January 17 to sign up. 

On January 24, 2012 at 6:30 pm there will be a Broiler Clinic at the Extension Office. Topics that will be covered include: housing, nutrition, health, daily care, and selection. If you have been showing broilers for years for if this is your first time, this workshop is for you! Please contact the Extension office at 627-3341 to sign up!

Another exciting (scholarship) opportunity for Senior 4-H members is the San Antonio Livestock Show and Rodeo School Tours. This year Wise County 4-Her’s will give tours to school children on Wednesday, February 22^nd at the San Antonio Stock Show. We will travel to San Antonio after school on Tuesday, February 21^st and return home th evening of February 22^nd. All senior youth that participate in this tour guide experience have the opportunity to apply for a $1,000 scholarship (in either 4-H or FFA) or an add-on to their market animal if it makes the sale at San Antonio. The tour guide training dates are January 23^rd and 24^th and February 1^st and 2^nd from 5-6:30pm at the Extension office. You do not have to make every training, but please try to be present at least 2 trainings. For more information contact the Extension office.
