Community Activities

As you look forward to the many community activities taking place in October, there is one event in particular that I encourage you to attend.

The 21^st Annual Greenwood Fall Festival sponsored by the Greenwood Extension Education Club is scheduled for Saturday, October 13 from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm.  You’ll enjoy a parade beginning at 10:00 am and immediately following the parade, handcrafted arts and craft booths will be open.  Featured activities will be children’s train rides, food and game booths, silent auction items and door prizes. Booth space is available for $10 by contacting Gerry Galloway at 940/627-7999 or Linda Hood at 940/389-8497.

Prior to the event contact a Greenwood EE member to purchase raffle tickets on a $750 Cabela’s Gift Card, $500 Walmart Gift Card or a beautiful ‘Garden Glory’ Quilt.

Proceeds from the event are donated to the following local groups and more:  Angel Fund, Greenwood Buyers Association, CASA, Wise County 4-H, Greenwood/Slidell Fire Department, Slidell School Library, Sonflower Camp, Wise Hope Crisis Center and the North Texas Stockings for Soldiers Campaign.

For those unsure of finding Greenwood, it is a short, scenic drive out of Decatur on Highway 51 North for 10 miles to FM 1204, turn left and travel approximately five miles into the community of Greenwood.

Extension Education Clubs and Greenwood Fall Festival

Wise County Extension Education Clubs were represented at the annual (Texas Extension Education Association) State Convention in Waco, September 15-16 by Linda Hood, Gerry Galloway, Feliberto and Rosa Martinez, and Dixie Range of the Greenwood Extension Education Club. ‘The Open Heart of Texas’ was the theme of the two day conference.

The Greenwood Club was named as District 3’s Outstanding County during the Honor Roll of Counties report. The Honor Roll of Counties reflects the volunteer work that clubs have done in their community service projects during the past year.

Wise County Extension Education members will also have representation on the State Board with the installation of Dixie Range as the District 3 Director.  Dixie will serve as the link between the twenty-four District 3 counties, the State TEEA Board, and AgriLife Extension.

TEEA members also attended workshops, education programs, and AgriLife programs at the Waco Convention Center which will be shared with TEEA Clubs and counties. The group's mission is to work with Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service to strengthen and enrich families through educational programs, leadership development and community service.

The new year for Extension Education clubs begins soon and new members are welcome. Clubs currently formed are in the community of Greenwood. As an EE member you make new friends, participate in fun, fellowship and educational programs.

District 3 TEEA Conference

Six Wise County Extension Education members represented Wise County at the District 3 TEEA Conference Tuesday, March 31 in Vernon. Those attending were Dixie Range, Bobbie Ashley, Linda Hood, Janice Millican, Feliberto and Rosa Martinez.  Activities included: motivational speakers, silent auctions, and a cultural arts contest. 

The purpose of the cultural arts contest is to establish a broader understanding and awareness of arts and to envision individual growth, inspiration, and enrichment through participation in varied forms of art.  Wise County winners included:  Linda Hood, 1^st place- recycled items; Gerry Galloway, 2^nd place-Garments and Accessories Handmade and 2^nd place-Machine embroidery; Janice Millican, 2^nd place-Holiday Decoration; and Marilynn Collins, 2^nd place-Wall Hanging . 

The mission of the Texas Extension Education Association is to work with Texas AgriLife Extension Service to strengthen and enrich families through educational programs, leadership development and community service. Membership is open to adult Wise County residents regardless of socioeconomic level, race, color, sex, religion, disability, or nationality. An Extension Education club is established in the Greenwood community.  You are encouraged to visit their club meeting on the 4^th Friday of the month at 11:00 am at the Greenwood Fire Hall.

TEEA members also attended workshops, education programs, and AgriLife programs at the Multi-Purpose Events Center which will be shared with TEEA Clubs and counties.

The group's mission is to work with Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service to strengthen and enrich families through educational programs, leadership development and community service. The Conference commemorated the observance of 100 years of the Smith-Lever Act of 1914 and the relationship between TEEA and Extension.

The cultural arts contest saw winners from Wise County. Winners included: Marilynn Collins-2nd place with her Oopsie Daisy quilt. Anna Wattingney and Gerry Galloway also participated with entries in the machine embroidery and scrapbook categories.
